Poor People Dinner Parties |
Once, I just liked food and feeding my friends. Now, I cook in a restaurant in Boise. I still like food and feeding my friends, but it should go without saying, one doesn't get rich cooking for a living. I, with the help of my skinny artist fiancé, manage to have at least a few people over for dinner each week. Sometimes two or three nights in a row. Nothing brings me greater joy than sending my friends home full and happy. I also like to get my bills paid. I accept help with neither. I intend to document my tiny parties, some larger ones, perhaps a few quips from my job, and, without getting too fixated on numbers, how I can make very respectable food for tiny money. |

Last night should have included Nicholas, but he’s been sleeping about 18 hours a day, trying to get rid of a cold. So, it was just the three of us.

I managed to avoid going to the store, which is always awesome.
I made larb-style chicken, but didn’t have lettuce for wraps, so I used my baby quiche pan to make wonton cups, and served the larb in those. Also, rice, the pictured condiments, as well as spinach and toasted chickpeas over raw green cabbage in an orange-peanut-toasted coconut sauce.
All in all, dinner for 3 cost me about $5. Cabbage, 1/2 an apple, chickpeas, rice, spinach, one chicken breast [I buy bone-in]: all incredibly cheap, but nutritionally dense: sooooo nice. Throw in a bottle of Torrontes, a little under $15.
Those boys brought, along with their winning personalities, some very rich hazelnut and raspberry brownies. I ate more than I ought to have, without a doubt. Also, a lovely bottle of Valentin malbec.
Notes: food looks better in natural light. Alas. Moreover, I take horrible food photos: that’s why there’s only one posted.
This SHOULD be the only PPDP this week. Especially with a sickle Pickle.
Some crazies asked me to blog again, raising my self esteem dozens of points, and reminding me of how complicated maintaining a SUPER AWESOME MySpace blog was compared to the ease of Tumblr. Well, crazies, here’s your blog. RSS this shit. Follow me on Twitter, or see what it takes to get invited to dinner at our house.
Mostly, the willingness to eat food on a weekday and be sent home when it’s my bedtime. Also, the willingness to drink my alcohol and sometimes bring some to replace it. Rarely the willingness to invite me over to your own home, since I have been cursed in the department.
Oh look, it’s been two paragraphs and I’m already rambling.
I know there are AT LEAST 2 people who will read this. [Fingers waaaay crossed]
Inaugural dinner post tomorrow. Oh, yay.
